The coastline between Ucluelet and Tofino is a feeding and spawning destination of some of the largest runs of Chinook and Coho salmon on the entire West Coast of North America.
For those who want to experience world-class open ocean fishing, the action happens 20 miles off-shore from Ucluelet and Tofino, at La Perouse Bank. A unique offshore eco-system that supports numerous huge schools of bait fish. Teaming balls of Herring, Sardines, Needlefish, Pilchards, Squid, and Krill attract and support the legions of bigger game fish such as Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, Halibut and Rock Cod.
Fishing off shore is an 8 hour commitment and the ultimate west coast fishing experience If you do not wish to go offshore or would prefer a shorter trip the inshore fishing is also very productive. Right outside the harbour in either Tofino or Ucluelet, the reefs, kelp beds, and islands offer great inshore fishing.
Barkley Sound is known for its world-class saltwater fishing. In February and March herring gather in large numbers to spawn on the northern shore of Barkley Sound, drawing resident feeder Chinook. The highest number of Chinook, Coho and sockeye salmon, pass through Barkley Sound May – July, the best time for big Chinook (60 lbs), is July – September.
