Local Nature hikes

Ucluelet

The Wild Pacific Trail is a seven phase trail system skirting the rugged cliffs and shoreline of the Ucluth Penninsula. Overlooking Barkley Sound and the Broken Group Islands to the east and the open Pacific Ocean to the south and west, it offers spectacular shoreline panoramas and seaward vistas through ancient cedar and spruce-framed viewing platforms constructed on the best headlands along the route. We recommend the west coast headlands, history and lighthouses walking tour of the Wild Pacific Trail with Long Beach Nature Tours. Contrast the placid and protected Ucluelet Harbour waterfront with the fully-exposed headlands of Amphitrite Point, where huge swells from the open Pacific Ocean break relentlessly on the shore this western extremity of Barkley Sound.

The Park

There are nine short walking trails; two are wheelchair accessible. Most feature interpretive signs or brochures explaining the cultural and natural heritage en route. In addition to park trails, approximately 20km of sandy beaches provide enjoyable hiking. See long beach for guided tours offered in the Park. Tofino Tonquin beach trail .5km long – a small sandy beach on the west side of Tofino.

The Big Cedar Trail on Meares Island is a short boat ride from Tofino – 3 km boardwalk loop through ancient rainforest; some of the largest red cedar trees in North America.

See Kayaking or canoeing in Clayoquot for guided tours of Meares. Water taxi service to the island is available for a self-guided walk about.

Remote trails are accessed by boat from Tofino, offering a true wilderness experience of life on the edge of Vancouver Island.

Gibson Marine Park, located on Flores Island is the home of the Nuu-chah-nulth people. The community of Ahousat provides access to the Wild Side Trail, 22 km return, of moderate trail with boardwalk sections that extends from Ahousat to the top of Mount Flores. Most of the route follows sandy beaches and trails cut across headlands to join with the next beach.

An old telegraph trail runs the width of Vargas Island between its east and west coasts. The Ahous Trail, 5 km return, begins behind the Vargas Island Inn and has recently been protected as Vargas Island Provincial Park. The Ahous Trail takes about an hour to walk each way, most of it across the bog that characterizes much of the landscape inland from the beaches along the west coast.
